History of Sohar

Sohar is known to be the home of two well-known sailors, Ahmed bin Majid and Sinbad. It was once the largest town in Oman; reffered to as Majan which means seafaring. Some of the town's oldest buildings are built by copper that was mined locally.

Located at just a 2-hour drive from Muscat, you can drive there. Start off by visiting the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. After this, head to the Camel Racing Track. Then head to lunch at one of the city's local eateries. After this, you can visit the Traditional Handicraft Souq for some unique souvenirs. Spend the evening at the Sohar Corniche and watch the sunset. Then drive back to Muscat.

Sohar International Airport began its international operations in July 2017. SalamAir operates to and from Salalah and Sohar with a frequency for four times per week except on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

How to reach Sohar by road

Alternatively, you can take a cab, or rent a car and drive to Sohar after landing in Muscat or Salalah. To drive in Oman, you are required to have an International Driving Permit. You can easily rent cars from companies like Speedy Oman, Sixt Rent a Car (located at Muscat International Airport) and ArabiaCars upon showing your international driving permit. If you do not have a valid permit, you can hire a cab to take you there. There are a lot of taxies stands throughout Muscat and Salalah. You can easily get one from the airports.

How to reach Sohar by bus

There are some buses you can take from Salalah or Muscat to Sohar. A common operating company is called Mwasalat which offer intercity routes from Muscat and Salalah. Routes 41, 54, 62, 100, 101 and 201 travel from Muscat and have a transit stop at Sohar. Fares vary for single tickets from O.R 3 to O.R6 and return tickets from O.R 6 to O.R 10. Each bus route travels 2-3 times per day. It takes around 3 hours to reach Sohar from Muscat by bus.

It is effortless to get around in Sohar as there are well-connected buses and many taxi-stands throughout the city. You could also rent a car in Sohar and drive around the city if you wish, as long as you have a valid international driving permit.

September, November-February is the best time to visit Sohar in Oman. Hotel prices and flights are expensive during these months. March-May, the spring months in Sohar are warm and humid. Highest temperature ranges between 100.2°F (37.9°C) and 80.7°F (27.1°C). Rain is rare and tourism is pretty slow.
